Ask a questionUnder Article 14 of the Law on the Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova no. 253/2025, Moldovan citizenship may be granted, on request, to a foreign citizen, a stateless person, or a beneficiary of international protection or political asylum, aged over 18, who, on the date of submitting the application, has legal permanent residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, knows the Romanian language and the provisions of the Constitution, has legal sources of income and does not fall under the legal rules that set the grounds for refusal to grant, regain or recognise Moldovan citizenship, and who meets at least one of the following conditions:
- has had continuous legal residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for at least the last 10 years;
- is stateless or a beneficiary of international protection or political asylum and has had continuous legal residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for at least the last 8 years;
- has had continuous legal residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for the 5 years before turning 18;
- has been married to a citizen of the Republic of Moldova for at least 3 years and has had continuous legal residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for the last 3 years;
- has had continuous legal residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, for at least the last 3 years, at the home or temporary residence of parents, including adoptive parents, or of children, including adopted children, who are citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
The application for acquiring Moldovan citizenship by naturalisation is addressed to the President of the Republic of Moldova and is submitted in person at the subdivisions of the Public Services Agency in Chișinău.
Service deadline: the time for examining the application for acquiring Moldovan citizenship by naturalisation is up to 1 year.
The time for examining the application for acquiring Moldovan citizenship by naturalisation may be extended by a reasonably determined period needed to carry out the steps required to establish the authenticity of certain documents or the truthfulness of facts attested by the documents submitted by the applicant, or to remedy non-conformities identified during the examination of the application, but it cannot exceed 6 months.

How to apply
- Submitting the application
The application for acquiring Moldovan citizenship by naturalisation is addressed to the President of the Republic of Moldova and is submitted in person at the subdivisions of the Public Services Agency in Chișinău.
- Paying for the service
Payment of the fee for the requested service through the government electronic payment service MPay.
- Processing and examination
- Taking the facial image and scanning the signature;
- Completing the electronic form and printing the G1 application-questionnaire;
- Sending the information in electronic form and the application with the set of paper documents to the Department of Identity Documents, Citizenship and Population Records;
- Registering the documents (registry office);
- Processing of form G1 by the Information Registers Update Section of the General Directorate of the Production Centre;
- Checking the application and its set of documents and coordinating it with the General Inspectorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Intelligence and Security Service;
- Sending the application and its set of documents to the Commission on Citizenship and Political Asylum Issues attached to the President of the Republic of Moldova for examination within its competence;
- Issuing the Decree of the President of the Republic of Moldova on granting Moldovan citizenship;
- Carrying out the Decree of the President of the Republic of Moldova on granting Moldovan citizenship;
- Preparing the certificate and handing it to the applicant
Preparing the certificate on the granting of Moldovan citizenship on the basis of the oath of allegiance to the Republic of Moldova and handing it to the applicant, at the subdivisions of the Public Services Agency in Chișinău.
