Driving a foreign car in Moldova: vignette, licence and registration

If you drive a foreign-registered car in or through Moldova, you must buy a road vignette online before you drive. If you stay, your licence and your car have their own rules. Each step below links to the full guide.

Good to know

  • Who this is for: drivers of foreign-registered cars, trucks, buses and trailers who drive in or through Moldova.
  • The vignette is compulsory, and individuals and companies buy it online.
  • The fee is set in euro and paid in lei at the official exchange rate of the day of payment.

Steps, in order

  1. You do this

Buy the vignette online before you drive

For cars (and trailers attached to them) it costs from 4 euro for 7 days up to 85 euro for 180 days. The periods are 7, 15, 30, 90 and 180 days.

  2. Know when it is valid

The vignette is valid from 00:00 of the day you choose until 24:00 of the last day paid. Avoid paying online between 23:45 and 00:01, because the system may block the payment.

  3. Check your driving licence if you stay

A foreign licence is exchanged by taking the driving exam, unless the licence was issued in a country with which Moldova has an exchange agreement.

  4. You do this

Staying for good? Register the car

A vehicle that was registered in another country needs the foreign registration documents and, if you have them, the plates. An identification expert must inspect the vehicle first.
