Good to know
- The allowance is paid for up to 15 calendar days for each newborn or adopted child. For twins or more children from one pregnancy, the father gets it for each child. It can be taken in one block or divided into up to 3 parts, each of at least 5 calendar days.
- You must apply within 12 months of the birth or of the court's approval of the adoption. Apply online or at the CTAS counter (the father or the mother can apply) at the territorial office for your home, residence or main workplace.
- It is examined in 30 days from the application with all documents (or from the registration of the electronic application). Missing papers can be handed in within 30 calendar days. If more information is needed, the time grows by 30 days.
- Payment is through MPay: to a linked bank account, or in cash at any post office or Energbank branch. If you do not collect it for 3 months in a row, the payment is suspended.

Who qualifies?
Fathers who are employees (or in public service) need all of these:
- paternity leave was granted on request at all the places where you work, in the first 12 months after the birth or the adoption approval;
- you have a total contribution record of at least 3 years, or at least 9 months in the last 24 months before the birth;
- you ask within 12 months;
- you earned an insured income in the 3 months before the month of the birth.
Justice-sector professionals and independent entrepreneurs need:
- a contribution record of at least 3 years (or 9 months in the last 24 months);
- to ask within 12 months;
- compulsory state social insurance contributions paid for at least one month in the last 3 calendar months before the month of the birth.
For justice professionals the contributions count from 1 January 2021. For independent entrepreneurs they count from 1 January 2026. They get 15 calendar days counted from the date of birth or the adoption, without needing to be on paternity leave.
