Having a baby in Moldova: registration, documents and payments

After a birth in Moldova you register the child, and the state sets up most payments from data it already holds. The father applies for his own payment. Each step below links to the full guide.

Good to know

  • Who this is for: parents of a child born in Moldova.
  • In many cases you do not apply for the money: the birth, maternity and childcare allowances are set from data the state already holds. Fathers apply for the paternity allowance themselves.
  • Foreign parents: the birth guide lists the documents foreign parents bring. For the allowances, ask us about your case.

Steps, in order

  1. You do this

    Register the birth

Declare the birth within 1 month of the day your child is born. It is free and takes up to 3 working days. Either parent declares if the parents are married, both if they are not, and the mother if she is not married.

The electronic medical birth certificate (eCMND) is normally the basis.

  2. You do this

Get a birth certificate extract when you need one

Offices in Moldova and abroad can ask for an extract of the birth record. For use in some European countries, ask for the multilingual extract.

  3. Nothing for you to do

The birth allowance is set without an application

It is a one-off payment to the mother. You do not apply: it is paid from data the state already holds, once the child is registered.

  4. Nothing for you to do

The maternity allowance is set from the clinic’s data

You do not apply. The clinic sends the maternity leave medical certificate, and the allowance is granted from it. It is for insured women and some other groups, as the guide explains.

  5. Nothing for you to do

The childcare allowance is set automatically

It is paid every month until the child is 2, from the data in the State Population Register. If the child is adopted or placed in guardianship, you apply at the social insurance office.

  6. You do this

Fathers: apply for the paternity allowance

Apply within 12 months of the birth, online or at the social insurance office. The father or the mother can apply.

  7. You do this

Register your child with a family doctor

The guide lists the child’s birth certificate among the documents in some cases.

  8. Later: a passport for your child

A child can have their own passport when you need to travel. The fees for children are listed in the guide.

  9. Practical tip · not from an official source

    Check that the payments arrive

The allowances depend on data sent by the clinic and the registry. If a payment is late, ask the social insurance office or your clinic what is missing.

  10. Not covered here

    Pregnancy care and delivery costs

These are not covered on this page.
