The registration of marriage is the procedure by which the civil status body draws up the marriage record, on the basis of the marriage declaration. Marriage is a freely consented union between a man and a woman, concluded according to the provisions of the law, with the purpose of founding a family.

To conclude the marriage, the mutual, unvitiated consent, expressed personally and unconditionally by the persons who are marrying, is necessary, as well as reaching the marriageable age of 18. In well-justified cases, a reduction of the marriageable age by up to two years may be approved.

The application for a solemn marriage ceremony is submitted at the office of the civil status subdivision that has a ceremony hall.

On request, the territorial civil status subdivisions can register a marriage with a convicted person.

Documents issued abroad must be subject to the procedure of super-legalisation or apostille for the countries party to the Hague Convention of 1961 abolishing the requirement of legalisation for foreign public documents and must be accompanied by a notarially authenticated translation into Romanian, unless the international treaties to which the Republic of Moldova is a party provide otherwise.

When registering the marriage, each of the spouses, if they wish, may keep the name they bore before the marriage or take the name of either of them, or their name formed by joining.

Joining of names is not allowed when at least one of them is double. Partial joining of a compound name is possible.

The period for registering the marriage can be reduced at the request of the future spouses.

Prior appointment to request the services at the territorial subdivisions of the PSA is available here.
